The Department of Geology at Jagannath Barooah University successfully hosted GeoConnect 5.0 on June 28, 2025, at 10:00 AM in Seminar Hall 1 of the institute. This highly anticipated event featured a special talk by Dr. Raktim Ranjan Saikia, Head of the Department of Geology, Jagannath Barooah College (Upgraded to University).
Dr. Saikia delivered an insightful talk on "Reconstructing a Pre-Ahom Stratified State in Upper Assam Using Archaeological Sacred Sites and Palaeogeomorphology." His presentation delved into the comprehensive archaeological, geological, and geomorphological study of Upper Assam. The core objective of this research is to reconstruct the history of settlement and civilization in the region prior to the Ahom period.
The study employs a multi-faceted approach, utilizing archaeological evidence, detailed geomorphological surveys, and advanced scientific dating techniques. This rigorous methodology offers crucial insights into ancient human occupation, sophisticated brick architecture, and the seismic history of Upper Assam. By integrating these diverse data sets, the research helps establish clear timelines of cultural development and settlement patterns in pre-Ahom Assam (before the establishment of the Ahom kingdom in the 13th–14th centuries).
This pioneering archaeometric investigation in Assam combines geochronology and materials science to meticulously reconstruct the technological and cultural history of brick architecture in Upper Assam. Dr. Saikia's findings confirm the existence of sophisticated construction methods and organized settlements that predate or are contemporary with the early Ahom period, significantly enriching our understanding of Assam's rich archaeological heritage.
The event was skilfully coordinated by Abhisekh Sharma. Riya Konwar delivered the warm welcome address, and the session concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks by Ms. Uddipona Dutta of UG second semester. Ms. Dutta expressed the department’s deep appreciation to Dr. Raktim Ranjan Saikia for his enlightening talk and extended gratitude to all attendees for their active participation.
