GeoConnect 4.0 – Interactive Lecture Series on Earth Day 2025

On the occasion of Earth Day 2025, the Geological Forum of the Department of Geology, Jagannath Barooah University, successfully hosted “GeoConnect 4.0”—a student interactive session aimed at enriching and empowering students with enhanced scholarly insight. The event was held on 22nd April 2025 at Conference Hall (1) of the institute, starting from 11:30 a.m. onwards.

The event was graced by the presence of Dr. Sangeeta Sharma, Principal Scientist, Geo Sciences and Technology Division (GSTD), CSIR-NEIST, Jorhat, Assam, and an esteemed alumna of the department (1991–1994 batch), who attended as the resource person.

The session commenced with a warm welcome by Dimpol Borah, a 2nd Semester student, who greeted all the dignitaries present, including Dr. Sangeeta Sharma, past alumna Abhilash Baruah, and faculty members of the department—Dr. Raktim Ranjan Saikia, Mr. Sorat Konwar, and Dr. Chaitra Dhar Taye.

Jayshree Bordoloi, also a 2nd Semester student, continued the proceedings by elaborating on the significance of Earth Day and promoting environmental awareness and sustainability.

Along with the felicitation ceremony of the resource person, medals and certificates were awarded to the winners of the Quiz Competition held during GeoConnect 3.0.

Mr. Priyam Saikia, a 4th Semester student, gave a brief introduction of the resource person. This was followed by a talk delivered by Dr. Sangeeta Sharma on the topic “Seismic Vulnerability Assessment in NE India.” She delved into key concepts such as seismic vulnerability, structural susceptibility to earthquake damage, and highlighted regions at risk. Dr. Sharma also discussed several projects she has been involved in, offering valuable insights into the region's seismic risks and hazards.

The event concluded gracefully with a closing speech by the Head of the Department, Dr. Raktim Ranjan Saikia.

To mark Earth Day, a lychee sapling was planted by the esteemed guest and faculty members, with assistance from students, as a symbolic gesture of environmental stewardship. This act served as a poignant reminder of the importance of sustainable practices and the need to preserve our natural resources for future generations.
