The Department of Geology, Jagannath Barooah University, successfully organized a one-day workshop on “Introduction to GIS, GPS Data Handling, and Geo-Tagging Layout” on Tuesday, 28 April, 2026, in collaboration with Accelcraft Institute of Geoinformatics Technology. The programme was held at the SITA Conference Hall, JBU, on the occasion of International Geologists Day and Earth Day 2026.
The workshop commenced at 10:30 AM with the formal initiation of the programme, where participants and invited guests were welcomed and seated. The session was conducted by the anchors, Bishwanarayan Borah and Chinmoyee Gogoi (4th Semester), who guided the programme throughout. The significance of the occasion was highlighted through a speech delivered by Masud Zaman (4th Semester), who emphasized the role of geologists in environmental conservation and sustainable development, marking the importance of both International Geologists Day and Earth Day.
Following this, the Head of the Department, Dr. Raktim Ranjan Saikia, was invited to address the gathering. He shared a few insightful words, encouraging students to actively engage with emerging geospatial technologies and highlighting their relevance in present-day geological studies and research.
The invited resource persons, Mr. Shahid Iqbal Hussain, Ms. Priyakshi Bora, and Ms. Rashmi Dihingia, addressed the participants and shared their insights on the growing importance of geospatial technologies in modern scientific research and industry practices.
Following this, a certificate and prize distribution ceremony was conducted, during which the winners of various intra-departmental competitions were recognized and awarded. The prizes were distributed by Dr. Chaita dhar Taye. In the intra-department quiz competition on the eve of International Women's Day, the first position was secured by Anuska Bhuyan and Shreya Sarma, while the second position was achieved by Anurag Dutta, Bishwanarayan Boruah, and Bishnu Kamal Kalita. Subsequently, the technical session of the workshop commenced. The session covered key topics including basic GIS and Remote Sensing applications, GPS data handling techniques, and geo-tagging layout preparation. The training was conducted in an interactive manner, combining theoretical explanations with practical understanding.
The post-tea break session focused on further discussions and hands-on learning, allowing participants to engage directly with the resource persons and clarify their concepts.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Anit Ranjan Paul (2nd Semester), who expressed gratitude to the organizers, resource persons, and participants for their active involvement and contribution to the success of the event.
