The Audio Visual Study Centre at Jagannath Baruah College, established in 2016, is the only one of its kind in North-East India. It aims to familiarize the students of J.B. College and neighboring colleges to the strong film culture of this region, embracing not only filmmaking but also criticizing and writing on the subject of cinema..
The Audio Visual Study Centre, with the collaboration of Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute and Educational Multimedia Research Centre, St. Xavier College of Kolkata and Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Regional Government Film and Television Institute of Guwahati, organized various workshops and training programmes time to time. Some of such programmes were: Film Appreciation Workshops in 2011 and 2013, Animation Workshop in 2014, Script Writing Workshops in 2017 and 2018, Short Film Making Workshop in 2018 etc. The centre also offers two UGC sponsored skill based courses form 2015-2016 Academic sessions, i.e. (1) Introduction to film Studies and Digital Film Making and (2) Stage and Screen Acting. The Audio Visual Study Centre had also organized several short film festivals.
In 2016, when the college became autonomous, the Audio Visual Study Centre established a new academic setup as Department of Film Studies. From its initiation the department has been offering Film Studies as Generic Elective (GE) and Skill Enhancement Course (SEC) in Digital Photography and Digital Film Editing at Undergraduate level. The department of Film Studies with association with the department of Assamese also offers Generic Elective (GE) course at Post Graduate level, starting from the academic session 2019-20.
