Keeping in view the need of the students of Jorhat and the neighbouring areas who were desirous of studying Geography at their HS and UG level, the subject was introduced in this college in 1972. The first Geography teacher was Late Harendra Nath Borah. Initially, the subject Geography was introduced in the Commerce section of this college as Commercial Geography. Subsequently, the college had a full-fledged Geography Department in 1978 and has reached its present status as a result of the continuous efforts of its faculty members who joined subsequently. At present, the department is operating undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programs for the aspiring students.
