The Department of Sanskrit, J.B. College was established on 10th October’1930. It is a matter of pride for the department of Sanskrit that the founder Principal of J. B. College, Jorhat Prof. Krishna Kanta Handique, Renowned Orientalist, distinguished Scholar & academician and the founder secretary Prof. Tulsi Narayan Sarma both were the personalities behind this department. The main goals of this department are:
The Department has been constantly engaged in popularizing and propagating Sanskrit studies. The department currently offers Higher Secondary course and three year BA in Sanskrit (Honours) courses.
The main goals of this department are —
(i) To impart education and train up students in different areas of Sanskrit.
(ii) To make awareness of importance of Sanskrit learning among the students community and general people.
The history of the Department of Sanskrit, J B College begins with the history of the College itself. The Department came into existence in 1930 when the College had come into existence. It is a matter of pride for the department of Sanskrit that the founder Principal of J. B. College, Jorhat Prof. Krishna Kanta Handique, Renowned Orientalist, distinguished Scholar & academician and the founder secretary Prof. Tulsi Narayan Sarma both were the personalities behind this department. Many prominent scholars of Assam like Prof Mukunda Madhava Sharma, former VC of Dibrugarh University, Prof. Keshada Mahanta, Sahitya Akedemi Award Winner were working in this department.
