The Department of Geology, Jagannath Barooah College was constituted in 1977. At present it offers an academic program of B.Sc. (Honours) & M.Sc. (From current academic year i.e., 2025-26) in Geology. The department focuses on an understanding of fundamental concepts of Earth and Planetary processes. It admits about 40 students annually in its B.Sc. program. At present the department has five faculty members and one office staff. It has ample modern classrooms and laboratories to carry out its teaching-learning activities. There is a sufficient collection of books and journals in the departmental library.

The department of Geology of Jagannath Barooah College aims to offer quality education in the field of Earth Science. The prime goal of the department is to provide students with hands-on training in both classical and modern approaches including geological field-work, microscopy techniques, remote sensing and computational techniques to better understand the subject as well as address environmental and socio-economic issues.
Employment opportunities for Geologists in the private sector have set up the challenge of making our students fit for private organizations. The following steps are planned for fulfilling this objective.
The Department of Geology was established in 1977 and erstwhile it started with Geology pass course. Later, in 1981, the department introduced geology in higher secondary courses after getting the required permission. At first, two faculty members namely Mukut Bora, (Founder Head) and S.K Bhagawati were associated with the establishment of the department. The full-fledged B.Sc. major Geology course was introduced in the department from 1984 onwards and faculty strength also increased. Presently, Choice Base Credit System (CBCS) is continuing in the department which was introduced in 2016.
