The Department of Economics has started functioning since 1930 as Civics & Economics. Lt. Mohesh Ghose was the founder Head of the Department. Later on, Imran Hussain Choudhury joined as the faculty. Honours classes were started from 1946. The department presently has six permanent faculty members committed to teaching basics to advanced levels of understanding of the subject and also give students exposure to academic research. Since1930, the department has been producing some eminent persons of great repute, who are presently occupying prominent positions in the society.
The department of economics strives to teach the concepts of economic thought from simple to complex, and to impart practical knowledge of the subject. The teaching in the department also focuses on the application of economic theories in daily life, as a producer and consumer, for rational decision making. The department engages the learners in data collection, processing, and analysis on various emerging economic issues, aimed at equipping students for career in academia and employability in the dynamic job market. The department also takes steps in mentoring, counselling, and other activities for students’ progression. The curriculumn designed by the department are meant to support and encourage research and to develop entrepreneurship skills in alignment with the new education policy for better understanding of the 21st century changing economy (particularly Post-Covid economic challenges). The department’s goal is to enhance learners’ employability in higher educational institutions and as well as in the diverse sector of the economy.
