To commemorate the birth centenary of the eminent writer Mahasweta Devi, the Department of Bengali in collaboration with the Department of Sanskrit, Jagannath Barooah University, organized an invited talk programme on 29 April 2026.
The programme was inaugurated by Prof. Jyotiprasad Saikia, Vice Chancellor of Jagannath Barooah University, who highlighted the enduring relevance of Mahasweta Devi’s literary contributions and her unwavering commitment to social justice and the rights of marginalized communities.
The invited speaker for the programme was Prof. Binita Rani Das of the Department of Bengali, Gauhati University. She delivered an illuminating lecture on the topic, “Literary Creations of Mahasweta Devi: A Discussion.” Prior to the lecture, Dr. Sangita Bora formally introduced the speaker to the audience.
In her presentation, Prof. Das offered a comprehensive analysis of Mahasweta Devi’s literary works and discussed their deep social and political significance. She emphasized how Mahasweta Devi’s writings powerfully portray the struggles of tribal communities, women, and other marginalized groups, and continue to inspire readers and scholars across generations.
The programme was conducted by Dr. Champak Deka, Head of the Department of Sanskrit, who skillfully anchored the event. The welcome address was delivered by Debabrata Lahiri, who warmly greeted the distinguished guests, faculty members, and students. The formal vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Swapna Borah, who expressed gratitude to the Vice Chancellor, the invited speaker, and all participants for making the programme a meaningful academic occasion.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from faculty members, research scholars, and students. The programme provided an enriching platform for reflecting on the literary and social contributions of Mahasweta Devi and reaffirmed the University’s commitment to promoting interdisciplinary academic engagement and literary scholarship.
