The Department of History, Jagannath Barooah College, is one of the six departments opened at the time of its establishment in 1930. Honours (Major) course in the department was introduced in 1962. Professor Guna Gobinda Dutta was the founder Head of the Department. The department presently has four sanctioned posts against which teachers are available. The faculty specializes in a range of fields such as history of Assam, vernacular historiography, regional histories, art and culture, Indian medicine and environmental history. In addition to teaching, the department organizes special lectures, seminars, panel discussions etc. to augment the intellectual development of students. Over the years, history students have attained distinction in different spheres ranging from research, social analysis, teaching, law, administrative services, corporate sector, media and communications to films. The department has an active ‘History Study Forum’ with all students and teachers as its members. The society has the tradition of electing its own office bearers who under the guidance of faculty members regularly organize seminars, educational trips, heritage walks, departmental festival and publication of a hand written magazine ‘Sanchipat’. The department has a well- equipped library that is run under the supervision of a faculty member. Each student can enroll herself/himself as its member. The department also seeks to encourage holistic participation of its students in college life. The department currently offers FYUGP (Honours) programme and PG programme endeavours to offer the widest possible options in terms of the papers prescribed under NEP at the undergraduate level.
